Do Car Dealerships Own the Cars They Are Selling

do car dealerships own their cars

While looking at the rows and rows of cars available on the lot of a car dealership you might find yourself wondering, do car dealerships own the cars they are selling? The short answer is it depends on the dealership. Car dealerships purchase and outright own the cars that they have on their lot, or they use special financing programs available through manufacturers.

They then sell these cars at a higher price to customers to see a profit and manage the overhead costs of running a dealership. Dealerships can buy the cars on their lots from several sources ranging from trade ins and auctions to purchasing directly from the manufacturer.

Most car dealerships acquire their vehicles using a tool called “floorplan financing”. This helps them keep a large stock of vehicles that are available to be driven off the lot as soon as they are bought. Until the time of the sale of the vehicle, the financer or lender holds the title of the car rather than the dealership itself.

What Is Floorplan Financing

Car dealerships use floorplan financing to finance their wide selection of cars. Maintaining a wide selection allows dealerships to meet customer needs without any lag time in supplying a vehicle and transferring ownership. If this financing option wasn’t available to dealerships, many customers would be forced to buy their cars via a catalogue which can take months before the car arrives at the dealership.

The lender for floorplan financing is often the manufacturer of the vehicle. They offer the dealership a budget, for example, over the course of a year they might extend a dealership a 2-million-dollar loan for 100 cars. While the car stays on the dealership’s lot the dealership makes payments to the manufacturer. This creates an added incentive to sell cars quickly.

The lender will check the dealer’s inventory often and if a car is taking too long to sell, they might ask the dealer to pay for the vehicle upfront to avoid any monetary loss as the car’s value depreciates over time.

Many used car dealerships use floorplan financing as well, but they can also own the vehicles on their lot outright. This is something that you will see more often with used car dealerships because of the lower cost of used cars. Used car dealerships might purchase the cars on their lots through trade ins or through auctions where the price of a vehicle is considerably lower than when buying new directly from the manufacturer.

Do Car Dealerships Pay Taxes on The Vehicles They Purchase

Car dealerships do not pay tax on the vehicles on their lot. They don’t pay taxes because they are a franchise, so it works much the same as when you buy items from a grocery store. Essentially, the tax is passed on to the customers like a sales tax.

You pay the sales tax when you buy a vehicle and then the dealership pays the sales tax to the government. When you finance through a car dealership, you are more likely to see the out-the-door cost of your car than if you choose to finance through your bank. This is because a dealership will roll all the taxes and other costs involved in the purchase of your car into one statement.

It’s important to call your dealership and ask for an out-the-door-cost before showing up to buy your car if you choose to finance your purchase yourself or through your bank. This can help you avoid any awkwardness when taxes and other fees drive the price up from the first sale quote.

Helping Hands: Gaithersburg Apartments

Days after the explosion at Potomac Oaks Park Apartments in Gaithersburg the Montgomery Housing Partneship jumped in to help families, some who lost everything. 100% of the money donated will go directly to families. They are not new to helping families when disasters like this take place.

“This is the holiday times. These families are struggling. It’s never a good time, but especially a difficult time for these families,” Goldman explained.

Joel Bassam of Easterns Automotive Group wanted to bring light to what they are doing to help the families who have been displaced. In this difficult time, Goldman appreciated the gesture that would assist families who needed it most.

“This is very generous. Well, this is just one more example of the community coming together. Every penny, every dollar will go directly to the families,” Goldman replied.

Helping Hands: Taste of Home

During the pandemic, Hunter and Sydney Guthrie started donating baked goods to the Embry Rucker Community Shelter, a food-insecure community in Fairfax county.

“Biscuits, brownies, cookies,” Sydney said. “We found out as we kept doing this that there was a greater need for this because they weren’t turning anyone away.”

Along with their mom, they created a nonprofit called A Taste of Home. Food requests are not turned away as a result of a no-refusal policy implemented at the shelter.

“They were accepting more people, so we felt a moral obligation to provide more goods so that we would be able to make up for that,” Sydney explained.

More than 100,000 servings of baked goods have been donated to the shelter with help from Panera. Sydney and Hunter were also joined by students across Fairfax County in their mission to provide baked goods for as many people as possible.

Amazed by their drive to help feed others Joel Bassam with Easterns Automotive Group surprised Taste of Home with a 7News Helping Hand.

“Nothing touches our heart more than feeding people who are hungry. The fact that you have done over 100,000 servings through A Taste of Home is absolutely amazing, and we want to support your cause by donating $2,200 so you can keep helping those who are in need. Keep doing the amazing work that you are doing!”

Hunter and Sydney will be able to bake more for those in need with the help of Easterns Automotive, but their vision is to do even bigger and better things in the future.

“My hope is that we can ask grocery stores to discount items so that this can go even further,” their mother, Keira Guthrie, said.

How To Reset the Maintenance Light in Your Toyota Camry

It’s happened to every Toyota Camry owner at some point. You’re driving down the highway when you notice a new symbol glowing behind the wheel. Do you know what to do when that Maintenance Required light comes on in your vehicle?

What Does the Maintenance Required Light Mean?

If your Toyota Camry needs to be serviced, the maintenance required light will light up on your dashboard.

Although the warning may seem serious, this light can be deceiving. This indicator is generally set to automatically activate at 5,000-mile intervals to remind car owners of the need for oil changes, regardless of actual urgency or the type of oil you use. Some car owners may prefer more or less frequent oil change intervals, meaning the activation of the light might not be entirely relevant.

Maryland and Virginia drivers can implement a simple fix in a matter of minutes if their sole desire is to turn the light off. If you suspect the light came on for a less mundane reason than exceeding a preset number of miles, it may be in your best interest to have the vehicle checked.

How To Reset the Maintenance Light in a Toyota Camry

It can be a hassle to drive around with the maintenance light on, but the most important thing to remember is that it serves a purpose. Your maintenance required light lets you know when it’s time to have your Camry serviced.

If you’re like most drivers, you probably find the light disconcerting, distracting or annoying, and you may decide to turn it off now that you know it’s time to schedule a visit with your preferred mechanic or oil change shop. You can reset the maintenance light in your Toyota Camry with these easy steps:

  1. Insert your key into the ignition and turn it to position one. This is the position right before starting your vehicle.
  2. Push and hold the odometer button while you turn your key to position two.
  3. Hold down the odometer button until the maintenance light begins to flash. The light should turn off during this time.
  4. Release the odometer button and start your car.
  5. Check and see if the maintenance light is still on. If it’s not, then you’re done. If it is, repeat the above steps.

Servicing Your Toyota Camry

The maintenance required light turns on when it’s time to take your Camry to the shop. This is common at around 5,000 miles and is when you should look into getting one or more of these services:

  • Oil change
  • Filter change
  • Brake check
  • Overall inspection
  • Tire rotation

Resetting the maintenance light in your Toyota Camry is a quick fix for drivers who don’t want to be distracted by a blaring light, but it’s often best to take your vehicle in for service and let the technicians handle it. Drivers with busy schedules run the risk of simply forgetting that they reset the light and failing to have needed maintenance performed.

The maintenance required light does not indicate that your vehicle is unsafe to drive, but it should not be left unattended for long. Regular maintenance extends the life of your vehicle and increases your safety as a daily driver.

Why Did My Maintenance Required Light Turn on Early?

Mechanics generally reset the light’s mile countdown when they change your oil and filter, but they might forget that step. When the light goes on early, it’s often because your mechanic forgot to reset it.

Helping Hands: Mind Wellness Foundation

An honorable non-profit focused on mental health is being founded by a couple in memory of their son. Reggie and Dedeen Vaughn’s son, Chris, was diagnosed with PTSD and suffered from mental health issues before taking his own life a year ago. Before his passing, his last words were “Listen to your strong friends.” People often appear to be strong and okay but really may be battling other struggles.

During this tragedy, they sought to create a foundation in honor of Chris, called the Mind and Wellness Foundation. It was created to help others with mental health issues but especially young people.

Joel Bassam joined virtually with a special message as 7 News and Easterns Automotive Group surprised the family with a Helping Hand.

“The Mind and Wellness Foundation is an incredible organization. Committing yourselves to eradicate the stigma around mental health and changing the narrative to help others after the loss your family has experienced is an amazing way to help others,” said Joel Bassam of Easterns Automotive Group. “We want to support your cause by donating $2,000 to continue helping those in need.”

Legacy Farms

Lorie Young and Billie Jo Bevan are two Loudon County mothers that started Legacy Farms together to offer apprenticeship-style opportunities for the neurodiverse community. Both Lorie and Billie Jo’s sons are in the program, and they wanted to create a program where neurodiversity is celebrated and people understand their gifts and talents.

The program works with volunteers and paid physicians for those who may need it. They not only get to grow vegetables and flowers, but they also get to see their work sell.

“If you have ADHD, dyslexia, or different kinds of executive functioning delays, we support all of those young people ages 16 and up,” Bevan said.

For their outstanding contributions to the community, Eastern Automotive Group surprised Legacy Farms with a 7News Helping Hand. Joel Bassam joined with a special surprise for Kegacy Farms.

“I want to congratulate Legacy Farms on celebrating 10 years of working towards your mission of offering opportunities for our neurodiverse community of individuals looking to take their next steps in education,” Bassam said. “We want to donate $2,000 to your cause so you can continue sharing what you know and helping others grow.”

Pay It Forward: Fan DC

FAN D.C. is an organization working to lessen the impact of the foster care system for children in our area. On this Pay It Forward with Fox 5, we had the opportunity to learn more about FAN D.C. from Executive Director Josphine Mayzck and program participants Aaliyah and Jaylah.

They provide youth in foster care opportunities to nurture their interests and talents, acquire new skills, and gain a sense of personal and group recognition in an atmosphere of hope. The name FAN has deep roots in the foundation of the organization and is an acronym for Fihankra Akoma Ntoaso which means Safe Places, Linked Hearts. Fihankra is a communal housing compound in the Akan culture of West Africa, meaning a “safe enclosure” or “safe house.” Akoma Ntoaso means “linked hearts,” and is a symbol of understanding and agreement. Sadly, many young people lack access to such safe environments., which is critical to their development. They recently took several children to learn about Vermont to learn about farming. The children shared that they love that is is a safe space for them that allows them to have fun.

Eastern Automotove Group heard of the amazing things they are doing to help children in the foster care system and wanted to contribute to their cause. We donated $2,000, so they can continue to impact the lives of others.

If you know someone who should be featured on Pay It Forward, you can nominate them at wttgpayitforward@fox.com. Don’t forget to include their name and why they deserve recognition in your email.

How To Transfer a Car Title to a Family Member

gifting a car to a family member

Whether you are gifting or selling a car to a family member, you must follow the necessary steps to ensure the vehicle’s title and ownership are transferred correctly. Some documents and fees may vary depending on whether you live in Maryland or Virginia, but the process is essentially the same.

Regardless of the state you are living in, you will need the right forms and paperwork to successfully transfer a vehicle’s title.

  • Personal documents including a government-issued ID and proof of valid insurance.
  • The original title certificate must have the “Assignment of Title By Owner” section completed with the necessary information regarding the seller and buyer.
  • An odometer statement if the title doesn’t allow space for the vehicle’s milage.
  • Proof of sale including a bill of sale and/or a Vehicle Price Certificate (SUT 1) if the car is over five years old.
  • A vehicle safety inspection must be conducted, and you must have a valid safety inspection certificate in hand. Proof of emissions may also be required.
  • A lien release form if the buyer is taking over a lien on the vehicle.

Can You Gift a Car to a Family Member?

Yes, both Maryland and Virginia allow family members to gift vehicles to one another. The process of transferring a title when the vehicle is considered a gift is similar to selling or purchasing a vehicle. Both parties must complete a vehicle title transfer at the DMV or MVA.

When filling out the title, it is important to write “0” or “GIFT” in the purchase price section anytime you are gifting a vehicle. The recipient may be responsible for paying some taxes on the vehicle, including what’s called “excise tax,” which is based on the vehicle’s purchase price, mileage and age.

You can often avoid paying excise tax if the giver and recipient meet the necessary relationship requirements identified in your state’s gift certificate form. In most cases, if both parties share a last name, the excise tax will not be charged. Check your local DMV or MVA for state-specific relationship requirements when gifting a vehicle.

How Much Does It Cost to Transfer a Car Title?

Vehicle title transfer fees start at $15 or $100 depending on which state you are transferring the title in. It’s possible that additional fees may be charged. Visit your local DMV or MVA to learn about the costs involved with transferring a title.

The buyer or recipient will also need to pay vehicle registration fees. These costs vary by vehicle and the state where the vehicle is titled.

Can You Transfer Ownership Without a Title?

Ownership cannot be transferred to someone else without a title in hand. If the vehicle you are gifting, selling or buying doesn’t have a valid title, you will need to apply for a duplicate title. It can cost anywhere from $15 to $20 to request a duplicate title.

This does not exempt you from other title and registration fees. Once you receive the duplicate title in the mail, you will still be required to visit your local DMV or MVA and pay all applicable title transfer fees.

Do Car Dealerships Handle Title Transfers?

When purchasing a new or used car from a licensed dealer like Easterns Automotive, the buyer doesn’t have to worry about filing the title and registration paperwork. The dealer should accept and submit all documentation to the DMV or MVA on behalf of the buyer.

If you are transferring ownership of a vehicle you currently own, you will need to work directly with your local DMV or MVA office to complete the title transfer.

Is It Possible to Buy a Car with Zero Credit?

Anytime you finance a vehicle purchase (new or used), lenders must confirm that you will be able to repay them before they can offer you an auto loan. For most dealerships and auto lenders, this means making a judgment call based solely on your credit. Easterns Automotive’s uniqueness is defined by our slogan, “Where Your Job Is Your Credit.” Unlike many other dealerships, we’re willing to work with people who have less-than-perfect credit scores.

A person’s credit tells the lender if they have a history of responsible borrowing and on-time payments. A bank or credit union will be more apt to approve a loan if a car buyer has a high credit score and has established a pattern of good credit.

What Can I Expect if I Buy a Car with No Credit?

You will have more hoops to jump through if you’re financing your vehicle without a credit history to back you up. Since most lenders can’t easily establish your loan eligibility without a strong credit report, they will often request additional personal information and documentation to determine if you should qualify.

Can I Increase My Likelihood of Being Approved for a Car Loan?

If you lack a positive credit history, there are a few ways you can increase your chances of being approved for an auto loan.

  • Save for a down payment to decrease the principal of the loan you’ll need, thereby reducing your loan’s risk to the lender
  • Ask a trusted family member or friend (with good credit) to act as a co-signer on the loan
  • Get a reliable job with a steady paycheck
  • Shop around for a lender who approves riskier loans (i.e., car buyers with little to no credit)

Who Offers Auto Loans to People with No Credit?

  • Easterns Automotive has been committed to working with car shoppers who have poor credit or no credit for several decades. We know you’re more than a credit score and are ready and willing to work with you on financing options.
  • Credit unions sometimes work with car buyers who don’t have a robust credit profile. Some may offer credit-builder loans to help you purchase your car and build your credit at the same time. The catch is you will need to be a member of the credit union before you can apply for an auto loan.
  • Special financing offers are often a route a lender will take with a borrower who doesn’t have strong credit. If you are a student or recent graduate, you may be eligible for special savings that are designed to accommodate young people with no credit history. Lenders may ask for your GPA, income and down payment amount before determining if you qualify.

What If My Auto Loan Has Been Denied by Multiple Lenders?

Car buyers in Maryland, Virginia or DC often don’t have the time to wait for their credit to improve before they purchase the vehicle they need. Easterns Automotive believes having a less-than-perfect credit score doesn’t mean you must miss out on the car you love. We help local car buyers secure the financing they need to drive a car off our lot — no matter their credit score.
