Helping Hands – Randolph Elementary Food Pantry

A group of parents in Arlington, VA, has been feeding families during the pandemic. Bethany Sutton and the PTA of the Randolph Elementary School opened a community food pantry for students and their families that may be in need.

When they first opened the pantry in April of last year, they intended to serve the community for three weeks until school reopened after spring break. However, when schools never went back to their regular schedule, they decided to keep the pantry open to the community. They have seen an average of about 150 families a week. Every Friday, families receive a bag of non-perishable items and any extra donations they may have received that week.

Bethany spends a lot of her time working to secure donations from various community partners. Even neighbors have joined to help by bringing items to her home to give to families. Blown away by Randolph Elementary’s parents stepping up to help families in need, Joel Bassam, director of marketing at?Easterns Automotive Group, surprised Bethany with $1,500 to continue their food pantry for their students.

Pay It Forward – Khloe

Earlier this year, 11-year-old Khloe from Gainsville, Va, suffering from Alopecia, was ecstatic to receive a wig from Cardi B. Alopecia is an auto-immune disease that causes hair loss. Khloe has lost all of her hair, but her mother, Teia Ferguson Maxwell, made sure to instill in her daughter that beauty comes from within and that wigs are a nice accessory and option to have.

Once we saw how happy Khloe was, we had to do more! Khloe thought it was a typical day running errands with her mother, but little did she know she was in for a huge surprise from the Easterns Automotive Group and the Pay It Forward team.

The glam squad at DanieNikole beauty bar in Greenbelt, Maryland, joined in pampering Khloe. The hairstylist Danielle Easterling created custom units with hints of pink, while Bri Price and Kayla Farrar provided makeup and nails. Khloe walked out of the beauty bar, surprised by her family, and left with a makeover that left her speechless. Joel Bassam from Easterns Automotive Group even joined in, surprising her with even more. She was able to take home two hair units, a gift card to Forever 21, and because she is a big Roblox fan, she also received an X-box gift card.

Helping Hands – Cape Ivy

A mother from Fairfax county has made it her mission to help children all over the country by providing warmth and comfort. Meg Smith began sewing ponchos for her son, Gavin when he was six years old. Due to his rare form of Common Variable?Immune Deficiency, he spent a lot of his time growing up in and out of the hospital. Meg created ponchos to keep him warm since he couldn’t wear robes because of his IV or PICC line. After her son passed, Meg and her business partner, Cindy, began to sew and donate ponchos to hospitals to keep other chronic and critically ill children warm.

They made their first delivery in 2019 to Inova Children’s Hospital, and they have now expanded across the country and recently became a non-profit called Cape Ivy. If you’d like to request a cape for your child?

Touched by Meg’s efforts to supply warmth, comfort, and support for children across our area, Joel Bassam joined with a message for Meg and a surprise of $1500 so that she can continue to expand her mission. This surprise will help Meg donate 128 capes.

The Future of Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicles in Washington, DC and Baltimore

In 2016, hybrid (HEV) and electric vehicles (EV) accounted for just one percent of all the vehicles sold worldwide. The industry estimates that by 2025 about 30 percent of all vehicles sold will be EVs and HEVs. Global sales for electric vehicles were up to 3.27 million as of 2019, and are expected to reach about 27 million by 2030.

The rapid growth of electric and hybrid vehicle popularity is considered by many in the industry to be a cataclysmic shift in the auto market. Government incentives, pollution regulations and the affordability of electricity as a fuel source are driving rapid EV adoption.

Auto Makers Committing to EV and HEV

In January 2021, General Motors made history by being the first major U.S. manufacturer to make a total commitment to EV. Their goal is to eliminate gasoline and diesel car, van and SUV production by 2035. GM also wants to be a carbon neutral company by 2040.

This switch will require a projected $27 billion investment into EV technologies and products between 2020 and 2025. At their current rate of change, GM is projecting that about 40 percent of their new vehicles will be pure EV by the end of 2025.

Many other manufacturers are committing huge sums of money into electrifying existing and future models. Volkswagen has plans for roughly 70 EV models by 2030 and aims to increase EV production to 22 million with a $33 billion investment. Ford, already a leader in the HEV and EV market, will have spent $11.5 billion on new EVs by the end of 2022.

One of President Joe Biden’s first actions in office was an order for the federal government’s fleet of roughly 645,000 vehicles to be converted to HEVs or replaced with EVs. Making that happen isn’t as easy as signing an order, but the symbolic gesture is an indication of where his administration wants to go.

Consider the Postal Service, which accounts for about 228,000 of those vehicles. The average age of a Postal Service truck is an astonishing 28 years, and the agency spends about $2 billion a year on maintenance. The new Postal Service truck design released in February 2021 isn’t completely electric, but the trucks are designed to be retrofitted for total EV in the future.

Maryland Is Outpacing Virginia in EV Adoption

The electric vehicle use rate in Virginia is still less than two percent, in large part due to a limited inventory of EVs and HEVs on new and used vehicle lots and a lack of purchasing incentives.

Maryland, on the other hand, was offering a limited quantity of $3,000 state excise tax credits for the purchase of a plug-in EV. The only problem is that money ran out in June 2020. There’s currently a local state bill, the Clean Cars Act of 2021 (HB 44), to extend $26 million worth of EV and HEV purchase credits per year through 2023.

The new Clean Cars Act would offer a $3,000 tax credit for plug-in or fuel cell EVs and a $1,500 tax credit for plug-in HEVs (with a minimum battery capacity of 5 kilowatt-hours).

The legislation also includes $1.8 million per year in rebates for people and businesses that install Electrical Vehicle Service Equipment (EVSE).

Is There Really Any Cost Savings for Drivers with an HEV or EV?

Absolutely – a 2018 University of Michigan study found that the average cost of powering an EV vehicle in the United States is only $485 a year compared to $1,117 for gasoline powered vehicles.

Fuel costs in the United States have vacillated wildly over the past 15 years, ranging from $1.50 to $4.00 a gallon. During that period EV drivers were paying about $1.20 on average for a gallons-worth of distance.

Can You Find Pre-Owned Electric and Hybrid Vehicles in Baltimore and Washington D.C.?

Yes, you can browse Easterns Automotive’s diverse selection of EVs and HEVs here.

EVs and HEVs represent the inevitable future of vehicle ownership. Based on some loose climate goals, 90 percent of the nation’s vehicles should be electric by 2050. None of these mandates or estimates are codified in permanent laws, but there’s no telling what types of EV and HEV regulations or requirements will be passed over the next 10 to 20 years.

There’s nothing to stop you from getting an electric or hybrid electric vehicle today and cutting your fuel costs in half. Depending on where you live you may also qualify for tax credits or other purchasing incentives.

Is It Better to Buy a Used Car or a New Vehicle?

Being in the market to buy a new car can be overwhelming, especially with all the ways to buy a car these days. The internet has made the new and used car market easily accessible to all, but the debate is still ongoing about purchasing a car with 0 miles versus 30,000 miles.

The truth is that buying a car is personal, so the real question is, what is better for you? Most car buyers are focused on value; that is why at Eastern Automotive, we believe buying a used vehicle tends to be the better choice for shoppers.

If you are trying to decide if you should buy a used car or a brand-new car, here are some factors to consider.

New Car Versus Used Care Depreciation

What is depreciation? It is the reduction of value over time. The rate of depreciation on brand-new vehicles tends to be accelerated. A new car can depreciate as much as 30% in the first year you own it.

Depreciation is not a tangible loss that owners can see, that is until they decide to sell their “new” vehicle. After a couple more years, your brand-new purchase may only be worth half of what you paid for it.

A huge percent of the depreciation has already occurred before you purchase a used vehicle. The previous owner most likely took a significant loss. That is why you can buy a used car at a much lower price, just a year or two after it rolled out of the factory.

Think about a vehicle’s value and useful life as a percentage if that helps.

Someone who bought a new 2018 vehicle decides to sell it after 30,000 miles in 2021. This hypothetical vehicle can reliably go 150,000 miles, so it still has 80 percent of its useful life left.

Now you have a chance to purchase 80 percent of that useful vehicle life for half (or less) than what the original owner paid for it in 2018. The vehicle is just as good and still has all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a nice modern vehicle – it’s just half off.

Affordability and Loans

Financing a new vehicle purchase with a long-term loan often leaves people with a lot of extra accrued interest on an asset that’s already lost a ton of its value. By the time you finish paying a new car loan, you may have paid $45,000 for a vehicle that you can only sell for $20,000 (if you’re lucky).

Financing a pre-owned car often lets borrowers:

  • Take out less money
  • Pay off loans quicker with far lower monthly payments
  • Accrue less interest
  • Avoid huge losses due to depreciation

Less Expensive Car Insurance and Registration

Most used cars will have lower auto insurance premiums than new vehicles. Renewal tags are also generally cheaper on pre-owned cars, trucks and SUVs. These expenses are essential to take into consideration because they must be paid monthly (insurance) or every two years (Maryland and Virginia registration renewal).

A New Feel

Just because you are buying a used car doesn’t mean it has to be old and outdated. You can buy a practically “new” used car without eating the depreciation cost of a brand-new model. Plus, even pre-owned vehicles are new to the buyer.

Also keep in mind that reputable dealerships like Easterns Automotive perform thorough checks and restorative maintenance to make sure they’re only selling reliable pre-owned vehicles.

Get Access to Way More Vehicles in Your Price Range (Including Luxury Cars)

Buying used also opens up your options to purchase a luxury car that would be out of your price range new. You can get the speed, sporty look and the luxury aesthetic and features for far less than a brand-new model.

Luxury cars also depreciate faster than most other vehicles. In some cases, last year’s luxury car model can be half the price when purchased used.

Why Leasing a Used Car Might Be the Best Option for You

Every driver’s financial situation is unique, especially right now. COVID-19 has been extraordinarily tough on many families. Maybe you’ve had trouble finding work, or one of the normal wage earners in your household has had to forgo regular employment to stay home with your kids during the day.

There are a nearly endless number of reasons for people to be on a tight budget, but many of those reasons won’t prevent you from qualifying for pre-owned vehicle financing.

At Easterns Automotive, helping people in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. metro areas qualify for great financing is one of the things that sets us apart from the competition.

However, getting a loan and purchasing a used car, truck or SUV may not be your only option. Another service that sets Easterns Automotive apart is our pre-owned vehicle leasing program.

When Might Leasing Be the Right Option for You?

Leasing is often the ideal solution for a certain type of driver, but there are some important restrictions to keep in mind. Depending on your transportation needs, these restrictions may not be disadvantages. Used car leases are:

  • Recommended for drivers who just need a vehicle to commute around the Baltimore or D.C. metro areas because you’ll be limited on the number of miles you can put on the vehicle without incurring extra charges
  • Ideal if you plan on getting a different pre-owned or new vehicle within the next few years
  • Often cheaper, with monthly payments that are lower than a car loan

For people who just need a vehicle to run errands, get to school or commute to and from work, the mile restrictions generally aren’t an issue. If your job requires frequent commutes out of the metro area or out of state – or your family loves road trips – maybe leasing isn’t the best option.

The limited timespan of a lease makes it kind of like a long-term rental car. You can’t make modifications to the vehicle and there may be restrictions on how you can use your leased car or truck, but those restrictions aren’t a problem for many city commuters who are just looking for a reliable vehicle for local transportation.

You won’t be building equity in a leased vehicle the same way you would if you purchase the vehicle with financing. However, lessees do usually get a buyout offer at the end of their lease term.

If you’ve been happy with your leased pre-owned vehicle and you want to keep it at the end of your term, you can choose to purchase the vehicle for its dealership value minus the depreciation you’ve paid each month on your lease payments. The process is a little different than building equity through monthly car loan payments, but the end result is similar.

Why Leasing Could End with a Great Vehicle Purchase Opportunity

There’s a uniquely beneficial quirk when leasing a used vehicle if you do choose to take the buyout option at the end of your lease term.

Monthly lease payments, whether the car is new or used, are derived from a calculation based on the vehicle’s valuation. New car valuations are relatively static and generally dictated by the dealership and manufacturer.

Used vehicle valuations are a little different. In some cases, a lender may undervalue a reliable pre-owned vehicle. You might end up leasing a great car for a lower monthly rate than you’d pay with financing. Then, at the end of your lease, you’ll get a buyout option that may be well below the vehicle’s market value.

Can You Lease with No Credit or Bad Credit?

At Easterns Automotive we work with more than 30 car loan lenders to find workable financing options for drivers with all types of credit situations. We take pride in our flexible terms and our ability to find solutions for people with poor credit or no credit history.

If you’re concerned you may not qualify for an auto loan or a pre-owned vehicle lease, call us. You might be pleasantly surprised by some of the advantageous rates and terms we can help you find.

Road To A Better Community – Just 1 Inc

Covid has completely turned all of our lives upside down, and as we all continue to adjust, some of us are finding ways new ways to help others in need.

Connie Denton commits a big part of her life to help children in developing countries. Children who can’t afford things we take for granted, like being able to go to school. She founded the non-profit Just 1 Inc and set out to help just one child at a time by educating and empowering them, and she has now helped about 1000 children.

Once the pandemic started, Connie witnessed a need in her very own community, causing her to shift her focus. She changed her non-profit’s direction from “just one child” to “just one senior or homeless individual.” Connie organized a team to deliver groceries to senior citizens who can’t leave their homes. She also spends her weekends dropping off clothes and food to those without shelter.

Touched by all of her efforts to support so many individuals in the community, Joel Bassam joined to share a special message and surprise Connie with $2,000, so she can continue to do fantastic work helping and feeding others.
