Pay It Forward – Manizi Azizi Helps Families Who Fled Afghanistan

For the past month, thousands of Afghans have been fleeing Afghanistan. Some of these refugees are starting a new life here in America with nothing but a Maryland resident named Manizha Aziz has decided to pay it forward and help.

Aziz understood how these families felt since she came to this country as a refugee with her family years ago. She first volunteered with local groups and helped distribute donated items, but soon, refugees reached out to her directly because she spoke Farsi.

They felt comfortable with Aziz because she was once in their shoes. Aziz worked for weeks and had a trailer full of items ready for the families until it was stolen from a parking lot in College Park, Maryland.

Aziz didn’t let that stop her with the help of family and friends; she started over and began to collect more donations and distribute items needed to families. Many families asked for things like diapers and winter clothes because of the upcoming winter months, and that has been her current goal.

Heartbroken by what happened to Aziz’s trailer, we wanted to help replace some of the stolen items. Joel Bassam, President of Easterns Automotive Group, told Azizi that the company would be donating to help clear her wish list on Amazon. Manizha was speechless and grateful as she received the check for $2,000.

Best Luxury Cars to Buy Used

Used cars are hot-ticket items in the current market, so price-conscious shoppers may be weighing their options when it comes to purchasing a vehicle of any kind. Most people who want the tech-laden opulence of a used luxury vehicle aren’t eager to break the bank for their purchase.

Shopping smart and taking a variety of factors into account when making your decision can help ensure you get the most out of your luxury vehicle purchase without overpaying.

A Previously Owned Luxury Car’s Valuation

Cars depreciate over time – especially luxury vehicles. If you are buying a new vehicle this process starts as soon as you drive it off the lot. Luxury cars tend to have steep initial depreciation, which is great news for used car buyers.

For example, BMW 7 currently has the steepest depreciation at 72.6 percent in five years. That’s a roughly $74,000 drop. BMW 5 is second at 70.1 percent, or $47,000. That means used vehicle shoppers looking for those vehicles are getting a huge discount on a luxury vehicle that’s only five years old. The Maserati Ghibli and Audi A6 also feature highly on the depreciation list at 69 percent in five years.

In all, eight out of 10 of the highest depreciation vehicles in 2021 are luxury vehicles.

Previously owned vehicle shoppers looking for luxury vehicles still won’t be getting the lowest prices on the lot, but they will likely be getting the highest rate of savings compared to the new vehicle sticker price.

Previous Owner Already Paid Most of the Depreciation

By the time you buy a five-year-old luxury vehicle the bulk of the depreciation cost has been paid by the previous owner or owners. When you buy a 2017 or 2018 luxury vehicle in 2021 you might only pay 70 percent of what the original owner paid for it. That means you will likely end up spending $30,000 to $35,000. Your luxury vehicle might depreciate another 50 percent by the time you go to sell in 2026, so instead of losing $70,000 to depreciation on a luxury vehicle you bought new, you will instead only lose about $15,000 to depreciation.

A Golden Opportunity

Why let a good opportunity go to waste? Used luxury vehicles, when properly maintained, can still provide drivers with a hundred thousand miles or more. There are several luxury car makers that have a reputation for dependability and longevity, especially brands like Lexus, Mercedes Benz and Porsche.

Spending $20,000 or $30,000 to purchase a well-maintained luxury car often makes drivers feel like they are getting a steal. Plus, if a buyer goes with a used luxury vehicle, they may be buying something that is no longer easily found on the market (or that may be an older version of a popular new model). They may end up enjoying unique and hard-to-find attributes at a third of the price as a new luxury vehicle.

A Car’s History

Many used luxury vehicles come with a maintenance and accident report. You’ll have an idea of what has happened to the vehicle, how well its been maintained and whether you see any warning signs for future car problems.

You also get years of testimonials from previous make and model owners on the internet. If you buy a five-year-old luxury vehicle you aren’t getting any surprises. You can check online and learn about the benefits and drawbacks experienced by people who have owned and driven the same type of car for years.

What Is a Low-Maintenance Car?

Every car, truck or SUV in the Washington DC or Baltimore area requires regular servicing to help maximize its longevity and performance, but some vehicles require more frequent visits to a dealership or mechanic than others.

Vehicle maintenance isn’t entirely about mechanical or electrical issues. Things like auto insurance, the cost of fuel and taxes are all added prices you’ll need to pay to continue driving your vehicle. These added costs of vehicle ownerships might also be considered maintenance costs by some.

By that standard, any vehicle that can be well maintained with oil changes and tire rotations but also offers low insurance and registration fees qualifies as low maintenance.

Used Hondas

Consumer Report has a helpful guide for the average maintenance cost of previously owned vehicles that are 5- or 10-years old. The difference in maintenance between certain car makers is striking.

Hondas generally have a reputation for being a reliable brand, and many of their vehicles do make the least expensive to maintain list, including the 2011 Honda CR-V, Fit and Ridgeline. Only the 2011 Honda Odyssey and Pilot made the most expensive to maintain and repair list.

Used Toyotas

Toyota Priuses especially earned a reputation as being one of the more reliable, long-lasting hybrid vehicles. According to Consumer Report they have approximately $260 in repair costs at the 10-year mark. Other low maintenance Toyotas (at the 10-year mark) included Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Tacoma, and Tundra.

Used Chevrolets

If you are in the market for a used Chevrolet, the Silverado 1500 and Tahoe were cited as being low maintenance models at the 10-year mark by Consumer Report. The Chevrolet Suburban and Traverse have on average $590 and $900 respectively in maintenance and repair costs at the 10-year mark.

Used Hyundais

Hyundai Genesis made Consumer Report’s list as being a low-maintenance model at the 10-year mark, with repair and maintenance costs running at approximately $200.

Used Nissans

We could not “leaf” the Nissan Leaf off this list – according to Consumer Reports this vehicle had no maintenance or repair costs associated with it at the 10-year mark.

If you are looking for a pickup truck, then a Nissan Frontier may be the final frontier for you with a low 10-year $200 maintenance and repair price tag attached to it.

Which Vehicles Have the Lowest Insurance Costs?

Your vehicle is just one of many factors that go into the equation that determines your auto insurance premiums. Other factors include your age, gender, the state and city in which you live and drive, your driving record and even your credit. The only factors insurance companies aren’t allowed to consider when determining your insurance costs are race and religion.

The vehicle you choose can have a positive or negative impact on your auto insurance rates. The insurance company will take into account:

  • How frequently the make and model is stolen
  • The vehicle’s engine size
  • The car’s official safety record and rating
  • Whether it is equipped with cutting-edge safety equipment
  • The replacement cost of the vehicle
  • The cost of repairs

There are several important things to keep in mind when purchasing a car that will be relevant to your insurance costs.

  • Used cars cost less to insure since they’ve already depreciated quite a bit by the time you purchase it
  • Older vehicle that don’t have quite as many fancy electronics or gadgets are less expensive to repair which often means lower insurance rates

Many pre-owned vehicles available at Easterns Automotive also come equipped with some of the latest safety features, which may entitle you to an insurance discount.

Local Virginia and Maryland Electric Vehicle Tax Credits and Rebates

There’s good news on the local front on electric vehicle tax incentives and rebates in Virginia. The Virginia General Assembly approved HB 1979, which provides a $2,500 rebate for the purchase of a new or used electric vehicle. If the purchaser of an EV has an income that doesn’t exceed 300 percent of the federal poverty level, they can get an extra $2,000 on their rebate for a new EV purchase and an extra $500 for a used EV purchase.

The measure is now in the Virginia Senate where it’s currently waiting for a Finance and Appropriations committee hearing to determine if it will be funded.

Maryland’s $3,000 excise tax credit on EV vehicles and hybrids is still depleted for the fiscal year, but it may be funded again in the future.

There’s a standing $7,500 federal tax credit on qualified new electric vehicles and a reduced credit for many new hybrids.

Will There Be New Federal Electric Vehicle (EV) Tax Expansions?

The Biden Administration and congressional Democrats proposed an expansion of existing electric vehicle subsidies that would provide a $12,500 tax credit per union-made zero-emission vehicle assembled in the United States. The existing $7,500 tax credit would remain the same for non-union vehicles. This tax credit would still only apply to new vehicle purchases.

A Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimate suggested the tax credit would cost an estimated $31.6 billion over the next decade.

The existing tax credit is only good for up to 200,000 vehicles, and both General Motors and Tesla have exceeded their cap. The expansion would remove the 200,000 cap which means people who purchase GMs or Teslas would qualify for the tax credit – with one important caveat.

The tax credit wouldn’t apply to vehicles with MSRPs of $80,000 or more, which would primarily limit Tesla but also companies like GMC (EV Hummers), Audi, Bentley, Porsche, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and other luxury auto makers seeking to increase their presence in the electric vehicle space.

Maybe the biggest change would be giving consumers the ability to apply the credit at point of sale instead of as a traditional tax credit. That means they could essentially discount their vehicle when they purchase it. Estimates suggest the tax credit could result in a consumer price drop of roughly a third.

There’s quite a bit of potential criticism that can be levied from both sides in the bill. Creating a much better incentive for union-made vehicles might offend Republicans and foreign automakers that don’t rely on union labor. The expansion would clearly be picking economic winners and losers by giving greater subsidies to U.S. companies that fall in line with the administration’s labor agenda. Both Honda and Toyota have already reacted negatively to the proposal.

The bill, of which the EV tax credit expansion is just one part, also has penalties for traditional fossil fuel producers. Some of those producers have significant presences or employ many workers in traditionally Democratic districts, which might make the entire package a hard pill for every Democrat to swallow.

Injecting labor into an environmental bill that’s intended to help reach Biden’s goal of having 50 percent of all vehicles sold in the U.S. be electric by 2030 might also strike some people as counterproductive.

There’s also a criticism from some lawmakers that EV tax credits generally go to high-income individuals who don’t need to have their environmentalism subsidizes by taxpayers. They argue that many auto makers have already committed to switching primarily to EV and hybrid manufacturing in the upcoming decades, so why should U.S. taxpayers be nearly doubling subsidies to encourage the inevitable?

You Can Make Use of the Credit Today, But Not on Pre-Owned Vehicles

Many electric vehicles and hybrids currently on the market still qualify for the $7,500 federal income tax credit. However, only the original registered owner of a vehicle can claim the tax credit. If someone tries to sell you on a pre-owned EV or hybrid by suggesting you could claim the tax credit, they are incorrect.

However, electric vehicles and hybrids are rapidly becoming a bigger part of the pre-owned vehicle market in Washington DC and Baltimore. Improvements in battery technology and efficiency have enabled modern EVs to exceed the life expectancy of past generation vehicles.

You can find a great pre-owned electric or hybrid vehicle in our inventory.

Road to A Better Community – Camp Kesem

There is an estimated population of over 5 million children in the United States who have lost a parent to cancer, have a parent undergoing cancer treatment, or whose parent is a cancer survivor. In the heart of Maryland’s Eastern Shore is Camp Kesem. A far from ordinary camp. They are the largest organization that serves kids who have been impacted by their parent’s cancer.

Cancer already places massive stress on families, and they do not want financial barriers to stop kids from coming. Local college students drive the camp, and year-round they are fundraising to make sure this experience is 100% free for children ages 6 – 18. Camp Kesem isn’t a grief or cancer camp; it is an opportunity for kids to be kids again. They are all given Camp names that allow the kids to embody that personality and be whoever they want.

Joined by Joel Bassam from Easterns Automotive Group, he surprised Camp Kesem counselors with a check for $2,500. “It is impossible to find a family who has not been touched by cancer in some way, and it’s important that you are helping these kids move on,” shares Joel. This donation from Easterns saves Camp Kesem from some fundraising and helps them purchase supplies for activities like all of the slimes they made this summer.
